What advanced stats mean and why they matter

TS%

True Shooting %

TS% (True Shooting %) captures the real shooting efficiency by accounting for the extra value of 3-pointers and free throws. FG% counts 2s and 3s equally; TS% weights them properly. A high-TS% scorer is genuinely efficient.

eFG%

Effective FG %

eFG% (Effective FG %) credits 3-point shots their proper 1.5× value. A 5-of-10 from 3 is 50% in raw FG% but 75% in eFG%. Unlike TS%, it ignores free throws — pure shot efficiency.

Assist-to-Turnover

How many assists per turnover? A simple but powerful indicator of a guard's ball-handling and decision-making.

Field Goal %

Overall field goal percentage. Bigs can hit 70%; guards 45% is solid. Doesn't reflect 3-point value — use eFG% for that.

3-Point %

3-point percentage. Always pair with attempt volume — 5-of-10 is 50% but sample is tiny.

Free throw percentage. Strong side-indicator of overall shooting touch — good FT shooters typically shoot well overall.

Average assists per game. Playmaking ability — assists that lead directly to a teammate's score.

Turnovers per game (lower is better). High-usage players naturally turn it over more, so pair with AST/TO.

Net Rating

Team net efficiency: points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions. NetRtg ≥ +5 over a season is contender territory.

Offensive Rating

Points per 100 possessions. Pace-adjusted offense — 110+ is a strong offense.

Pace

Pace

Possessions per 48 minutes. Higher = faster game. Pace itself isn't good or bad, but it's needed to fairly compare efficiency.

PER

Player Efficiency Rating

Hollinger's PER aggregates weighted box-score events per minute. The league average is normalized to 15.

Share of all positive/negative actions in a game produced by this player. Simple but intuitive — 10% is league average.

Usage rate: share of team possessions ended by this player (shot, FT, or turnover) while on court. Primary option 30%+.

Screen/Hockey AST

Origin Assists

Screen / secondary (hockey) assist — a pass or screen one step before the actual assist. Catches creators that traditional AST undercounts.

Defensive Deflections

Deflections — times the player tipped the ball without necessarily a steal. Tracks disruptive defense beyond the steal count.
